Selecting Cemetery Monuments To Commemorate A Life

After the loss of someone important to us, we will often choose to erect cemetery monuments of some kind in their memory. This is part of the healing process and brings a sense of closure to the grieving family. A personalized reminder of their life, put up as a cemetery monument, is a fine way to show the rest of society how highly we regarded the one who has passed.

Grave markers or headstones can be made from a variety of different materials. Constructed or carved from the simpler and less durable wood, to granite, bronze, other rocks and other metals. This again, will depend on cost and how complex and detailed you wish to go. Generally speaking though, the most common materials used in a headstone would be concrete, granite or marble.

The particular wishes of the family or of the person who has passed will dictate the style of the tombstone. You may wish to have a simple, elegant design of only the person’s particulars, or add in an engraved dedication or message. You could also choose something more extravagant and elaborate. Perhaps the marker in question is for a family crypt and will be large out of the need to include multiple names and dates.

With the size of the monument being linked to the dead person’s importance and wealth it would be common to see rather large metal or stone monuments in their honour. This would be a reflection of the place they held in society before their death. Spending time in a cemetery in a poorer community or country you would notice that the grave markers are simpler. Perhaps a stone mound, or a wooden cross with a name etched in.

Inscriptions on a headstone are selected by either the deceased before they passed, or by the loved ones that do the final arrangements. Some are as simple as the name of the deceased, with his date of birth and the date of his death. Others are more detailed, with either a quote or excerpt from a poem as well. This too is the choice of those involved in the process and if you select a sombre poem or humorous quote, it is entirely up to you.

The symbols on the marker that you choose will probably be based on your religious beliefs and convictions. Selection of something that holds significant importance to the family and the deceased is often drawn from the influence of spiritual convictions. This is also a way of portraying an image of the one who has passed and letting society get a glimpse of who they were and what they believed in.

Many people opt to personalize the grave marker even further by including a picture of the deceased or by adding a personal memento that was meaningful or held importance to the one who has passed. Adding angels to protect a young child who has passed away is quite normal and aids the family in dealing with the pain of their loss.

The companies that supply the cemetery monuments will be highly sensitive to the situation that you are in and will not apply pressure or allow their sales staff to harass you. You may even have the wisdom to plan ahead and make arrangements for your marker before you pass on. This will ensure that there is emotional decisions and no cost to the family whilst in their moments of grief. Being able to select exactly the wording you want as well as the design, will allow you more control of your final wishes.
